Welcome to the Highland Lakes Amateur Radio Club

Our goal is to help our members and the public learn more about the hobby through the educational and scientific aspects of Amateur Radio.

Highland Lakes Amateur Radio Club Nets

What is a Net?

A net is an on-the-air gathering of licensed amateur radio operators—and anyone interested in amateur radio—who share a common interest or purpose.

If you are not yet licensed, FCC regulations do not permit you to transmit on amateur radio frequencies, but you are more than welcome to listen. Listening is one of the best ways to learn, and we hope it inspires you to earn your amateur radio license so you can join the conversation. In the meantime, feel free to email the club with any questions or comments, and we’ll be happy to relay them during the net.

Elmer Net

Thursdays at 1930 (7:30 PM) Local Time

An “Elmer” is an experienced amateur radio operator who serves as a mentor or teacher. Whether you’re studying for your first license or have been licensed for years, the Elmer Net is a great place to ask questions, learn new skills, and share knowledge.

Topics range from beginner-level questions to advanced technical discussions, making this one of the best ways to expand your knowledge of amateur radio.

Simplex Net

Tuesdays at 1900 (7:00 PM) Local Time
Frequency: 146.475 MHz (Simplex)

The Simplex Net provides an opportunity for operators to communicate radio-to-radio without using a repeater. This net is designed to:

  • Test radio equipment and antennas

  • Practice direct station-to-station communications

  • Evaluate emergency communications capability

  • Improve operator skills in real-world conditions

Whether you’re using a handheld, mobile, or base station, everyone is encouraged to check in and see how well they can be heard throughout the area.

Wrap-Up Net

Sundays at 2000 (8:00 PM) Local Time
(Immediately following the ARES Training Net if it runs long.)

The Wrap-Up Net is an informal gathering to discuss your week, share projects you’ve been working on, ask questions, and simply enjoy conversation with fellow amateur radio operators. There is no script—just good fellowship and great conversation.

Repeater Information

The Elmer Net and Wrap-Up Net are held on:

  • Frequency: 147.020 MHz

  • Access Tone (CTCSS): 100.0 Hz

The repeater is located approximately 9 miles northwest of Marble Falls, Texas.
